How do you spot repairs on Coalport porcelain?

Start with bright angled light and your fingertips. Look for glaze that stops at a line, paint that sits slightly raised, or gold that looks newer than nearby areas on the piece. A restored rim chip may show a tiny change in translucency when held up to light. Applied flowers deserve a thorough, close study, as glue shine, mismatched petal colour, or petals that feel “soft” at the edge can signal replacement. Smell can help too; old repair pastes sometimes give a faint scent when warmed by the hand. A UV torch can reveal some modern fills and overpaint; however, results are not perfect. If a seller calls a piece “mint” yet photos hide the rim, assume nothing.
