Coalport is closely associated with china in many reference descriptions, particularly in the 19th century, when demand favored durable, white pastes suitable for fine painting and gilding. Biographical sources on John Rose mention that Coalport's china glaze was in high demand and its quality improved in the early 19th century. Not all items labeled "Coalport" in the modern trade are from the original Shropshire period; however, china remains a recurring element in much of Coalport's production. Tap the rim gently, china often resonates more clearly than earthenware, although the sound alone cannot authenticate a piece.
