Is Wedgwood Jasperware the same thing as porcelain?

Wedgwood Jasperware is not porcelain. Wedgwood describes Jasper as an unglazed, vitreous fine stoneware, made in coloured bodies with applied reliefs. Porcelain and bone china are glazed, fired ceramics with a different look and feel—often whiter and more translucent at thin rims. Jasper is matte and dry to the touch, with crisp raised decoration that stands out against the coloured ground. This difference matters in listings: a seller might write “porcelain jasper,” yet Jasper is its own category. If you want an item to match a bone china tea set, Jasper will not blend visually at the table in the same way. If you want display pieces, Jasper medallions, vases, and plaques are central to Wedgwood collecting. Check the base stamp and the surface finish: matte coloured body plus white relief points to Jasper.
