What are Minton tiles, and what were they used for?

Minton produced architectural tiles, including encaustic tiles made with coloured clays that form patterns through the body. These tiles were used in churches, halls, and civic buildings, where toughness and pattern mattered as much as looks. Encaustic work suited Gothic Revival interiors, with repeating motifs and heraldic designs. Minton’s tile production connects the firm to architecture and interior decoration, not only dining. Buyers sometimes find single tiles salvaged from old floors or walls, and these can be collectible, yet condition is key. Look for surface wear, chips at corners, and any damage from removal. Provenance can add interest, especially when a tile can be linked to a known building project or a documented pattern used in public commissions.
