What are Royal Doulton figurines, and what do HN numbers mean?

Royal Doulton figurines are collectible sculptures, many catalogued using “HN” numbers that serve as model identifiers. Lists of early figurines show HN-numbered models in production from at least 1913, with designers such as Charles J. Noke and Phoebe Stabler appearing in early entries. The HN number is useful for identification since figurine names can repeat, change, or appear in multiple colourways. With an HN number, you can usually confirm the model’s name, approximate issue period, and known variations in collectors’ references. For buying, the HN number plus size, colourway, and backstamp style often tells more than the figurine’s title alone.
