Chelsea porcelain is classified as soft-paste porcelain, meaning that its product recipe was different from the true hard-paste porcelain made in China and later in parts of Europe. Soft-paste wares can be creamy white, with a glaze that can pool in the recesses, and a feel that is different from later bone china. Soft-paste can peel more easily at the edges and petals, so it is important to check its condition. Many Chelsea pieces were painted with rich enamels and gilding, so look for rubbing in raised areas and repaired cracks on handles, spouts, and attached leaves.
