Museum summaries usually date the Gold Anchor Chelsea to around 1759–1772. Many value this period for its sophisticated painting and widespread collection of figure groups, decorative details and cutlery. Gold anchors can be heavily gilded, so wear patterns tell a story, the rims, leaf edges and figure details are likely to be affected by abrasion, but significant loss may reduce the object's appeal. A gold anchor mark that is too new for the age of the object may raise doubts, so compare it with museum photographs and check for close-ups taken in bright light.
