Vista Alegre Porcelain

Vista Alegre’s porcelain uses a high-fire hard-paste body containing kaolin, feldspar and quartz, following recipes developed in the nineteenth century and refined with modern technology. Kaolin deposits near Ílhavo supported the move into porcelain during the 1830s, giving the factory a stable local supply of white clay. The porcelain body is fired at high temperatures to achieve a dense, non-porous surface with good mechanical strength, suitable for daily table use. For crystal, the group works under the Vista Alegre Atlantis structure, which produces lead-free crystal with high clarity and brilliance, cut and polished using traditional and modern methods. Decoration may involve coloured glazes, overglaze enamels, transfer prints, hand painting, relief modelling and metallic finishes such as gold or platinum. The mix of these materials creates pieces that range from everyday restaurant plates to elaborate showpieces with detailed painting and gilding, often produced in smaller runs for collectors and special projects.
