Two names are mentioned at the beginning, of Thomas Frye, a painter, and Edward Heylyn, who was a merchant. They received a patent in December 1744, which is often mentioned in accounts of early English porcelain try-outs. A second patent, dated 1 November 1748, is attributed only to Frye and is in a document trail describing Bow's recipes and claims. The dates of production are debated, but museum biographies often place commercial production between the date of the first patent and late 1749/1750.
