What is parquetry compared with marquetry?

Wood marquetry

Parquetry compared with marquetry shows two related furniture crafts with different visual aims. Marquetry forms pictures, flowers, figures, landscapes, or scrolling ornament through cut veneers and parquetry uses geometric shapes arranged into repeated patterns. Diamonds, stars, cubes, and herringbone layouts rank among the best-known parquetry forms. Palace floors from France often used parquetry during the 1600s and Versailles contains famous parquet floors installed after 1684. Furniture makers later applied similar geometric patterns onto table tops, cabinets, and desks. Marquetry demanded pictorial skill similar to painting. Parquetry relied more on mathematical layout and repeated symmetry and many antique pieces combine both methods, where a cabinet might contain parquetry borders around marquetry flowers. Georgian furniture from Britain often used satinwood parquetry lines around drawer fronts. Fine parquetry still needs careful veneer cutting and accurate glue work and a single mistake can throw off an entire pattern.
