R.W. Wingate Ltd

R.W. Wingate Ltd was based at Hockley Centre in Birmingham, according to dealer records for its hallmarked jewellery. That address places the name within Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Local history records say the Hockley Centre opened in 1971, only two years before the earliest Wingate piece in this set of online records, a gold signet ring hallmarked in 1973.

The connection can be checked on that 1973 18-carat yellow-gold signet ring. Its hallmark group includes the RWW sponsor mark, gold marks, the Birmingham anchor and the date letter Y. Later silver jewellery carries the same regional link. Recorded examples include a 1977 silver locket, a 1978 silver ingot pendant, a 1980 silver signet ring and a 1988 engraved silver bracelet. Each item helps tie the firm to Birmingham production and assay activity across more than one jewellery type.

Current online findings confirm Hockley Centre as an operating address used in dealer research, yet, unfortunately, it does not provide a full list of workshops, moves or branch addresses. For collectors, the strongest location evidence remains the repeated Birmingham anchor on dated RWW jewellery combined with the Hockley Centre attribution.
