What jewellery did R.W. Wingate Ltd make?
Updated: Aug 24

R.W. Wingate Ltd jewellery included gold signet rings, silver signet rings, silver ingot rings, ingot pendants, lockets and engraved hinged bracelets. These types are recorded in dealer listings and auction catalogues, giving a useful view of the Birmingham firm’s output during the 1970s and 1980s. One well-recorded gold piece is an 18-carat yellow-gold signet ring hallmarked in Birmingham in 1973.
It has a square front, a blank cartouche, chased scrolling leaf decoration and a total weight of 13.76 grams. A silver ingot ring from Birmingham 1977 weighed 11.33 grams and sold at auction in 2024. A separate 1977 auction lot contained a Wingate silver locket measuring about 55 by 42 millimetres. Later examples include a 1980 sterling-silver signet ring and a 1988 oval hinged bracelet with floral engraving. With R.W. Wingate works, plain and engravable surfaces appear often, joined by decorative chasing or engraved plant motifs on selected pieces.
