When was Aynsley founded, and who started it?

The Aynsley company dates back to 1775, when it was founded in Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire by John Aynsley. This founding date is a key part of the brand identity and is mentioned in many modern descriptions of the company. Early production included decorated wares, and over the next century the business grew to become a major name in Longton pottery. Later in 1861 John Aynsley (grandson) built the Portland Works, creating the iconic factory buildings that most people associate with the Aynsley Longton history. For a very early Aynsley pieces, see the close-up photographs of the reference mark, as early wares may be unmarked or marked differently from the later crown and letter stamps.
