Why did families display coat of arms plaques in their homes?

Coat of arms plaques were displayed in homes as a clear sign of identity, and the phrase coat of arms plaques appears in estate inventories from the 1500s. Families used these plaques to show lineage, achievements, and social standing. In many cases, a coat of arms was granted as recognition of service, often linked to military or royal favour. Large plaques were placed in entrance halls or above fireplaces, where visitors would notice them immediately. In English manor houses built between 1500 and 1700, it was common to find at least one heraldic display in the main reception room. These plaques served more than decoration. They acted as visual records of family history, especially in times when written documents were rare or easily lost. Many were passed down through generations, becoming heirlooms.
