Murano glass

Venice moved glassmakers to Murano in 1291. Murano glass history starts with that law from the Venetian Republic, as officials feared large furnace fires inside Venice, since homes and warehouses used timber beams and packed streets. The move created a glassmaking centre with strict control, as Murano soon turned into Europe’s top location for luxury glass. Skilled workers gained rare privileges, as some glassmaker families could marry Venetian nobility, which stood out during medieval times.

Venetian leaders wanted trade secrets kept inside the republic, Murano masters knew recipes for crystal glass, enamel decoration, coloured rods, and mirror production and rival cities wanted those methods. Records mention punishments for craftsmen who left Venice without permission. By the 1500s, more than 3,000 people worked in Murano furnaces, as trade ships carried Murano chandeliers, perfume bottles, and goblets across Europe and Asia and Murano wealth helped Venice stay strong in international trade for many decades.
