Are Belleek pieces dishwasher and microwave safe?

Some modern Belleek pieces are sold as dishwasher safe and microwave safe, including selected items from current Shamrock tableware collections. Those instructions relate to the named product, though, and should not be applied to every Belleek piece produced since the pottery opened in County Fermanagh in 1857. Antique and vintage Belleek need more careful treatment, fine Parian pieces can have very thin rims, applied flowers, raised decoration, lustre finishes or hand-painted details. Belleek baskets are particularly delicate, since their openwork bodies are formed from strands of Parian and may contain many small joins. Hot dishwasher cycles, strong detergents and contact with other dishes can place unnecessary strain on such pieces.

Older Belleek with gilding or lustre decoration is better washed by hand using lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Abrasive pads and harsh cleaning products can damage decorated surfaces. Sudden temperature changes should be avoided too and for modern Belleek tableware, check the care information supplied with the individual item before using a dishwasher or microwave. Backstamps can help estimate the age of older pieces, yet they do not automatically prove that an item is suitable for either appliance. If your collection contains both modern and antique Belleek, treat each piece according to its age, decoration and construction rather than assuming every item carrying the Belleek name has the same care requirements.
