What is the difference between Batik Tulis and Batik Cap?

Batik Tulis and Batik Cap are two of the best-known forms of Batik artwork. The main difference lies in how the wax patterns are applied to the fabric. Batik Tulis is created entirely by hand. An artisan uses a canting tool filled with melted wax to draw each line and shape directly onto the cloth. This method demands patience and skill, every piece is unique, and slight variations are considered part of its character. Batik Cap uses a copper stamp known as a cap. The stamp is dipped into hot wax and pressed onto the fabric to transfer repeating designs.

This technique became popular during the 19th century as demand for Batik increased and production became faster, allowing workshops to create larger quantities. A hand-drawn Batik Tulis piece often costs much more than Batik Cap. Collectors value the craftsmanship and time involved and some premium textiles combine both methods, with stamped sections forming the base pattern and hand-drawn details added later. Experts can often identify Batik Tulis by examining the reverse side of the cloth. The wax penetrates deeply, creating a similar appearance on both sides and stamped Batik may show small differences between the front and back.
