How are glass elements used in Arita ware?

Glass is used in Arita ware mainly through glazing techniques and mixed-material design. Traditional porcelain already relies on a glass-like glaze created from silica, feldspar, and ash, fired at around 1,300°C. In recent years, artisans have started combining actual glass with porcelain to produce hybrid pieces. These include vessels with glass interiors fused into ceramic shells or decorative panels where molten glass is poured into carved porcelain bases. The process requires careful timing, as glass melts at a lower temperature than porcelain. Kiln schedules are adjusted to prevent cracking or separation. Some studios report that only 60–70% of experimental pieces survive firing without defects. These glass features add depth, shine, and colour variation, making the pieces stand out in modern design markets. This approach has gained attention since the 2000s, especially among collectors looking for something beyond classic blue-and-white porcelain.
