How are Vista Alegre porcelain pieces decorated?

Vista Alegre Porcelain

Vista Alegre uses a mix of traditional and modern decoration methods. Many pieces receive underglaze decoration, where pigments are applied to the biscuit or glazed surface before high-temperature firing, creating durable patterns such as blue motifs that resist wear. Overglaze decoration uses enamels or transfers applied after the first glaze firing, then fixed in a subsequent, slightly lower firing, which allows bright colours, complex prints and photographic detail. Skilled painters still work by hand on high-end lines and limited editions, drawing fine lines, shading flowers, or adding details to figurines and sculptures. Gilding with gold or platinum uses either hand application or transfers, followed by another firing step. In recent decades, collaborations with designers brought bold graphic patterns and unexpected colour combinations, which often rely on high-quality transfer printing combined with selective hand finishing. This layered approach allows Vista Alegre to offer both classic museum-style pieces and contemporary, fashion-oriented designs within the same production framework.
