How do I date a Royal Worcester piece using factory marks?

Royal Worcester marks have evolved over time, and the Royal Worcester Museum provides guidance on how factory markings have evolved, including printed emblems and later additions of "Made in England". Many 20th century products have dates in the marking system itself (e.g. the symbols used change from year to year) rather than the full written date. First, look for a clear photograph of the base, then compare it to the museum's mark charts to find the closest match. Match this with clues from the product, the style of gilding, the colour palette, the name of the pattern and the shape (for example, shapes connected by lines from oven to table). If the mark appears blurry or partial, passing a light across the base can reveal embossed details that a quick glance would miss.
