Is “Limoges” a brand, or a region?

Limoges is the name of a region, not a single producer. Many companies produced porcelain in the Limoges area, sometimes selling blanks to decorating studios that featured painted scenes, flowers, or gilded frames. This is why two plates may bear the inscription "Limoges" but do not appear to be similar in shape, glaze or style of decoration. A practical step for buyers is to look past the word "Limoges" and focus on the factory mark, model name or number and any decorator marks. A well-documented manufacturer with a known model will often be easier to identify and replace. When buying, consider Limoges as your initial clue to provenance, and check everything else by tags and workmanship.
