What is Parian porcelain made from?

Parian porcelain is produced using a blend of feldspar, kaolin, and quartz. These materials are ground into a fine powder and mixed with water to form a liquid known as slip. This slip is poured into plaster moulds, where it begins to set into shape. After removal from the mould, the piece is refined and allowed to dry before firing. The firing process takes place at temperatures exceeding 1,200°C, which hardens the porcelain and gives it its characteristic strength. The high feldspar content contributes to the smooth texture and pale colour associated with Parian ware. Unlike glazed ceramics, no additional coating is applied after firing. This results in a matte surface that resembles marble. Donegal Parian China followed these traditional methods, combining mould production with hand-finishing to achieve detailed results. The composition has remained consistent since the 19th century, which links modern pieces to earlier European porcelain traditions.
