What should I look for to confirm a piece is genuine Spode?

Start with the base, as genuine pieces usually carry a clear printed or impressed mark naming Spode or a related marking from a known Spode era. Next, match the pattern to documented Spode designs — Blue Italian has a well-described border and central scene, and many modern lines list the pattern name right on product pages. Then check print quality, transfer-printed lines show crisp engraving-like detail, plus consistent borders from plate to plate. For older pieces, signs of age can include light glaze crazing and softer printing edges from wear, those signs do not prove authenticity alone. Build confidence by comparing your exact stamp layout and wording with museum references and established collecting guides rather than relying on a single online listing photo. A strong match across stamp, pattern, and body type is the safest path.
