Arita ware

Artisans working with Arita ware often use specialised glass types such as soda-lime glass or lead-free crystal blends. These materials are selected for their melting points and compatibility with porcelain. Soda-lime glass, which melts at around 800°C, is common for fused designs. Some studios use coloured glass powders or shards to create patterns within porcelain surfaces. The glass must expand and contract at rates close to the ceramic body to avoid cracking. Matching these properties requires testing and experience. In many cases, artisans develop their own blends or source materials from Japanese glass suppliers. The choice of glass affects colour clarity, transparency, and durability, making it a key part of the design process.
